Chapter 11

Kane tugged on my arm, pulling me to my feet. He leaned down so his eyes met mine. “We need to move.”

The words were soft enough he’d practically mouthed them instead of speaking out loud. That, more than anything, had fear clenching in my stomach.

A ridiculous reaction, a part of me argued.

This was my homeland. This was still human territory. I wasn’t certain what the threat was yet. Or what Kane perceived as a threat. Hadn’t he just told me I could hold my own against a human attacker? And he was a vampire!

A sweep of his arm had a gust of wind blowing snow over the fire and dousing it in seconds. The cold reacted instantly, seeping deeper into my bones despite the furs.

He took my hand and led us into the cold woods, my attention shifting from the warmth of his hand to the snow drifts rising to claim us. To the threat at our backs. He moved stealthily and I tried to be quiet with my movements, but I wasn’t nearly as successful as Kane. Think bumbling reindeer next to white rabbit.

We jogged through the trees, not saying a word as I saw larger and larger clouds of white air in front of my face, each exhalation heavier than the last until I felt like I couldn’t catch my breath.

I heard nothing behind us. Nothing except the beat of my heart, the struggle of my lungs. Finally, Kane had enough and swung me up in his arms, pushing forward on feet that easily carved through the snow. He said nothing.

I did the same.

Wings flashed overhead, and when I glanced up, I saw Stig making his way toward us. He cawed softly at Kane from overhead. The vampire cursed under his breath.

“You’re sure? Here?” Kane asked the bird.

I frowned. It was incredibly strange to see a man and a bird talking as if they were having a conversation. Yes, probably still hallucinating. A side effect of my dunk in the Bae. I shook my head to clear it, closed my eyes tight, and when I opened them the conversation continued.

“How many?” This was a bark of sound.

Stig swooped low to peck on Kane’s shoulder three times.

“Three what?” I asked, as though I had any part in this talk.

Kane craned his head down to stare at me with surprise.

I slapped him on the chest. He wasn’t even breathing heavily. “Oh, come on, that wasn’t hard to figure out.”

“Three Lycans ahead of us.” Kane turned his gaze forward to the darkened tree trunks, the snow glinting in the shafts of moonlight. So much longer to go. Nothing seemed out of place to me. “And I heard at least two coming from our camp.”

“The Lycans are here?” My heart jumped into my throat and threatened to choke me. “In human land outside the castle? That’s against protocol. They know it.” I ran my hands up and down my face, my cheeks numb.

What was going on? What did all this mean?

Kane peered down at me, moonlight illuminating the golden strands of his hair.
